Controversy started right away when a mysterious person displayed the Death Mark after the Quidditch World Cup. For those of you that havent read the books or seen any of the other movies, quidditch is a type of basketball game played while flying through the air. The game ends when the snitch, a small flying ball, is caught. For those of you who have read the books, there was no mention of Leprechauns gold, Veelas dance, or Winky.
I was actually really disappointed that this quidditch game wasnt focused on more, especially considering that it was cancelled at Hogwarts this year due to the Triwizard Tournament. The quidditch game seemed to be the only real action of the movie and it was condensed to 2 seconds.
The Triwizard Tournament was held at Hogwarts for the first time in many years, centuries even. It is a competition between the three largest European schools of wizardry: Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstang. This is a good opportunity for students to meet each other, especially with a dance to start things off once the contenders have been picked.
There are four contenders chosen, though there were only supposed to be one from each school. Even with the age restriction of seventeen years old, Harry still manages to get his name read as one of the contenders. He insists that he didnt do it, since he isnt 17 it would have been impossible to enter his name, as the Weasley twins demonstrate. This ruffles feathers between Harry and the rest of Hogwarts, most of whom support the real Hogwarts contender, Cedric.
This movie focused a bit more with relationships than the previous ones. Harry was interested in a girl, Hermione had a date, and Ron well, he was clueless and needed help. At the dance it was quite obvious that Ron and Harry were jealous of Hermiones date.
Although there were dragons, merpeople, and a maze, this movie really lacked action. I enjoyed the book much better than the movie, it seems that most of the action and mysteries were left out. Without Winky at the Quidditch World Cup there arent any ties from the beginning of the story to the end. The fact that someone escaped from Azkaban just seems to have been slipped in the end. There wasnt a fatal kiss and little was said about Lord Voldermort. Many of the characters were missing from the movie.
I went to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with friends, both of whom asked me questions about what was going on. I dont think I feel asleep, but with so much of the books plot missing, its what it feels like. The movie never picked up any momentum as was expected from the books action and drama. Since Ive read the books, I know what the next scene can present and what action and chair gripping suspense there could be, but it wasnt there.
If youre a Harry Potter fan, youre going to see it no-matter what I say, but if not, dont waste your money. Watch it with your Harry Potter fan friend after they buy it, then, at least, you can ask them whats going on.
